William F. Miller

Professional Career

William F. Miller is Professor of Public and Private Management, Graduate School of Business, Stanford University, and President and CEO Emeritus of SRI International. He is a member of the Political Economy Faculty of the Graduate School of Business. He is also a Professor of Computer Science, School of Engineering, and Senior Fellow, Institute for International Studies.

On December 1, 1990 he retired as President and CEO of SRI International. He was also Chairman of the Board and CEO of the SRI Development Co. and Chairman of the Board and CEO of the David Sarnoff Research Center. Prior to serving as President and CEO of SRI International, Dr. Miller had served as Vice President and Provost of Stanford University, and before that as Vice President for Research and Associate Provost for Computing. Dr. Miller is an authority on international business, strategic use of new technologies, and public policy for industrial development. He is actively engaged in activities in China, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, and Sweden.

Dr. Miller has served on many government commissions, as Director of several corporations, and is a member of several honorary and professorial societies. He is Vice Chairman of the Board of Smart Valley, Inc., and is a member of the Board of CommerceNet. He is a member of the U.S. Committee of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council and a member of the International Advisory Council of the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (Malaysia). He is currently a member of the California Council on Science and Technology. He is a past member of the National Science Board and the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National Research Council. He was a member of the International Advisory Board for the Multifunction Polis for the government of Australia and past member of the International Advisory Panel of the Republic of Singapore National Science and Technology board.

Dr. Miller is a member of the Board of Directors of the Wells Fargo Bank and Co.; Borland International, Inc.; The McKenna Group (market research and consulting); the Palyn-Gould Group; Who Where ? Inc.; Quest Gen, Inc.; and the BHP International Advisory Council. He was a founder of the Mayfield Fund, a successful California venture capital fund, and a Director and Chairman of the Executive Committee of Varian Associates, Inc., as well as Director of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company, and the First Interstate Bank.

Dr. Miller is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences. Dr. Miller was recognized by Tau Beta Pi as the Eminent Engineer in 1989.

Dr. Miller is now actively engaged in development of the new information infrastructure in Silicon Valley and California. He speaks and writes on technology development, global changes in business strategy, policies for technology development, local and regional economic development, and the integration of socialist economies into the world economy.

Education and Affiliations

Dr. Miller received his graduate and undergraduate education at Purdue University where he received the B.S., M.S. Ph.D., and D.Sc, honoris causa. He has been a member of the Stanford University faculty since 1964. He teaches Technology Development and Public Policy and Restructuring Transition Economies. He is the Director of the Stanford Computer Industry Project and the North America Forum.

Dr. Miller and his wife Pat are active nature and wildlife photographers, having photographed on all continents.
